The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been tasked by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with administering the UGC-National Eligibility Test (NET). UGC-NET is an exam that determines an individual’s eligibility for ‘Assistant Professor’, ‘Junior Research Fellowship, and Assistant Professor’ positions in universities and colleges.

The awarding of a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/or eligibility for Assistant Professorship through the UGC-NET is based on the candidate’s overall performance in Papers I and II of the test. Candidates who only qualify for Assistant Professorship are not eligible for the Junior Research Fellowship.

For those individuals who could not clear the UGC-NET, here are some other job options:

Teaching Career

” Candidates who did not pass the UGC-NET but wish to continue their teaching profession might do so by acquiring a qualifying degree in their field of study. For example, to teach in schools, interested applicants must hold a B.Ed degree,” explains Priyanka Aravind, who worked as an Assistant Professor after passing the UGC-NET 2018.

Government Jobs and Higher Education

Candidates can also take numerous government examinations such as UPSC CSE, SSC CGL, and bank exams. The fundamental qualification would be to finish their graduation or any further criteria as required.

” Candidates can take the GATE Humanities And Social Sciences Exam to get into IITs. This way allows them to continue their further education,” adds Nila Rajeev, who received JRF in UGC-NET 2019.

“Interested candidates can also appear for PhD qualifying exams of respective universities to enrol for PhD in respective fields,” Priyanka goes on to state.

Corporate Sector

Candidates might find plenty of opportunities in the corporate sector. Candidates can identify different career routes based on their skill set and qualifications, such as content writing, translation, journalism, and so on.

Entrepreneurship

After failing the UGC-NET, many applicants pursue careers as entrepreneurs. The most frequent of them are coaching centers, which assist other applicants in pursuing their aim of clearing the UGC-NET with the assistance of specialists. Candidates will become young entrepreneurs in their field of study, depending on their specialization, such as business or literature.
