UP Crackdown: 60 BLOs Booked in Noida, Suspensions in Bahraich During Voter Roll Drive

The ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Uttar Pradesh has taken a serious turn, with the Noida administration booking more than 60 booth-level officers (BLOs) for alleged negligence. In Bahraich, two BLOs have been suspended and another has been booked following a political complaint. The moves reflect a tougher stance as authorities race toward the December 4 deadline for enumeration.

Noida Registers FIRs Against 60+ BLOs

Noida’s District Magistrate and District Election Officer, Medha Rupam, ordered FIRs under Section 32 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. The action followed repeated warnings that several BLOs were not reporting to their assigned areas or complying with instructions issued by senior officials.

Across three police stations—Dadri, Ecotech Phase 1, and Jewar—four FIRs have been filed:

  • Dadri: Two separate FIRs naming 18 officials, including anganwadi workers, government teachers, and six supervisors.
  • Ecotech Phase 1: An FIR against 33 BLOs and one supervisor.
  • Jewar: Officials filed another FIR against 17 BLOs.

All complaints were lodged by Sub-District Magistrates acting as Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) for the SIR drive.

A statement from the DM’s “War Room” said the action was strictly in line with Election Commission guidelines to ensure “effective, transparent and time-bound” voter roll verification.

What’s Different This Time?

The current SIR phase-II is underway across nine states and three Union Territories. BLOs have been given a heavier responsibility than in previous years:
They must match elector details on SIR forms with old rolls or parent records during the enumeration stage itself—not later.

Officials say the added responsibility is crucial to preventing errors and duplicate entries.

DM’s Strict Instructions

On Saturday, the DM held a review meeting with zonal and sector magistrates, reiterating that BLOs must conduct door-to-door verification, fill Form 6 for new voters, and update details through Form 8. Any delay or negligence could lead to:

  • Show-cause notices
  • Salary withholding
  • Disciplinary action

Action in Bahraich

Bahraich’s Basic Shiksha Adhikari, Ashish Kumar Singh, confirmed the suspension of two BLOs—primary school headmistress Shama Nafees and assistant teacher Anurag—for allegedly ignoring repeated instructions to report for duty during the SIR exercise.

A third BLO, Abhishek Singh, faces more serious trouble. A case has been filed against him after BJP leader Ankit Kumar Singh complained that the BLO used abusive language during a phone conversation about SIR form distribution. Police say the complainant submitted a call recording and chat logs as evidence.

The FIR, filed at Visheshwarganj police station, includes charges related to insult to provoke breach of peace, criminal intimidation, and defamation.

Why This Matters

With the SIR deadline approaching, UP authorities appear determined to avoid delays or inaccuracies in updating electoral rolls. For voters, this means cleaner lists ahead of upcoming elections—but for BLOs, it’s a reminder that skipping duties is no longer tolerated.
