Taking a courageous step towards wildlife preservation, Anant Ambani, the younger son of Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, has unveiled his visionary project, Vantara – destined to emerge as the world’s largest zoo and rehabilitation centre.
Titled ‘Vantara,’ resonating with the essence of ‘Star of the Forest,’ this groundbreaking endeavour is spread over 3,000 acres nestled within Reliance’s Jamnagar Refinery Complex, celebrated as the Green Belt Of Gujarat.
Unveiled on February 26, 2024, Vantara showcases dedicated enclaves for elephants and cutting-edge habitats for an array of wildlife, including lions, leopards, tigers, and crocodiles. Alongside scientifically crafted animal enclosures, the sanctuary boasts hydrotherapy pools, an expansive elephant jacuzzi for arthritis treatment, and an assortment of water bodies.
Delving deeper into the initiative, Anant disclosed Vantara’s collaboration with the Zoo Authority of India and allied governmental bodies to fortify over 150 zoological parks across India through training, capacity enhancement, and bolstered animal care infrastructure.

This ambitious wildlife sanctuary, sprawling across 3,000 acres, houses a sprawling 1 lakh sq ft hospital and medical research hub equipped with cutting-edge amenities, including MRI, X-ray, ICU, CT scan, dental scalers, endoscopy, lithotripsy, dialysis, ultrasound, and teleconferencing facilities for surgical interventions. Notably, an exclusive Elephant Hospital stands adorned with hyperbaric oxygen chambers, laser apparatus, and a pathology laboratory to deliver specialized care.
Expressing his fervour for the project, Anant Ambani remarked, “What commenced as a fervent pursuit in my youth has evolved into a profound mission with Vantara. We are steadfast in safeguarding critically endangered indigenous species while rejuvenating vital ecosystems and countering imminent threats to biodiversity, thereby positioning Vantara as a pioneering conservation bastion.”
Vantara’s rescue and rehabilitation nexus has reportedly shielded over 2,000 animals spanning 43 species from exploitative confines, facilitated by a dedicated workforce of 2,100 committed to extending sanctuary to distressed fauna.
Elucidating the ethos underpinning Vantara’s inception, Ambani elucidated, “Vantara epitomizes the fusion of timeless compassion with the pinnacle of contemporary scientific and technological prowess. I perceive Jeev Seva (animal welfare) as an offering to the divine and a service to humanity. My inspiration stems from my mother and the profound Hindu tenet, venerating animals as celestial beings.”
He continued, “We’ve orchestrated the relocation of over 200 elephants from disparate corners of the nation to this sanctuary. Our ethos revolves around ‘sewa’ (service) for these majestic creatures, transforming this expanse into a haven, not merely a zoo but a ‘sewalaya.’ The 600-acre expanse is meticulously curated as an idyllic habitat for elephants.”
Expounding further on the sanctuary’s offerings, Ambani elucidated, “We’ve instituted a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital boasting MRI and CT scan apparatus, robotic endoscopic surgery facilities, and six surgical theatres. Additionally, we administer prosthetics to animals in need. The precincts of our zoological sanctuary will soon unfold to the public, inviting them into this realm of compassionate conservation.”
As Vantara strides towards its vision of safeguarding biodiversity and fostering coexistence between humanity and wildlife, it stands as a beacon of hope, underscoring the imperative of harmonious stewardship of our planet’s irreplaceable natural heritage.
