Volkswagen is finally gearing up to enter one of India’s most competitive car segments—the sub-4 metre SUV space. After years of focusing on premium offerings, the German automaker is now preparing a compact SUV aimed directly at heavyweights like the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, and Hyundai Venue. The launch is expected around mid-2027, and early details suggest VW is taking this segment seriously.
Volkswagen’s Bigger India Push
Volkswagen’s upcoming compact SUV is part of a broader product push in India. The company is already planning updates for the Taigun and Virtus, along with the launch of the Tayron 7-seater SUV before the end of this year.

Now, with a new sub-4 metre SUV in development, VW is clearly looking to expand its reach into the mass-market segment where volumes are high and competition is fierce.
Based on Skoda Kylaq, But With a VW Twist
Reports indicate that this new SUV could be based on the Skoda Kylaq, though it won’t be a simple badge swap. Volkswagen is expected to give it its own identity with noticeable design and interior changes.
Think sharper styling, a more premium cabin feel, and possibly a sportier GT Line variant with an all-black theme. VW will likely borrow design cues from its bigger SUVs like the Taigun and Tayron to maintain brand consistency.
Design and Features: What to Expect
On the outside, the SUV is expected to get a fresh front grille, redesigned bumpers, and new lighting elements including updated headlamps and tail-lamps. The idea is to make it look distinctly Volkswagen, even if the base architecture is shared.
Inside, it’s likely to pack in features already seen in Skoda’s newer models. These could include:
- 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
- 8-inch digital driver display
- Ventilated front seats
- Rear parking sensors and TPMS
- Multiple airbags for improved safety
In short, Volkswagen seems to be aiming for a balance between premium feel and everyday usability.

Engine and Performance Details
Under the hood, the compact SUV is expected to use a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. This motor is likely to produce around 114 bhp and 178 Nm of torque—figures that are already familiar in VW Group cars in India.
Transmission options will likely include a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed torque converter automatic, giving buyers both convenience and control depending on their preference.
A Late Entry, But a Strong One?
Volkswagen may be late to the sub-4 metre SUV party, but it’s entering with a clear strategy. By combining proven mechanicals with a fresh design and feature-loaded cabin, the brand is aiming to stand out in a crowded segment.
The big question will be pricing. If VW manages to position this SUV competitively while retaining its premium touch, it could become a serious alternative to established players.
