Unemployment rate in India 2024: Economist Kaushik Basu made remarks on India’s massive unemployment over the last few decades. The former Chief Economic Advisor (CEA)’s comments to the Government of India concerning the India Employment Report 2024, which was issued by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Institute of Human Development (IHD).
Basu described it as a “new worry for educated youth in India” on X (previously Twitter), stating that the proportion of unemployed youth with secondary or higher education has increased from 35.2% (2000) to 65.7% (2022). This demonstrates what cronyism and the erosion of confidence are doing.”
What does the report say about the unemployment rate in India in 2024?
According to the analysis, the proportion of unemployed young adults with at least a secondary education has nearly doubled, rising from 35.2% in 2000 to 65.7% by 2022. In addition, young people account for 83% of the total unemployed in India.
Furthermore, many students drop out of school after completing their secondary education, particularly in low-income and underserved communities. Even while more people are attending college, there are still concerns about the quality of education. The survey finds considerable differences between what pupils are taught and what they actually learn in schools and institutions.
On March 27, the Congress accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in the Centre of attempting to “distort, distract, and divert”. The Grand Old Party stated that unemployment among young people remains a critical issue to solve as the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 approaches.
Rahul Gandhi on the report
Rahul Gandhi condemned the BJP-led NDA government. This was after CEA V Anantha Nageswaran stated that government would be unable to address both social and economic issues. According to Gandhi, the employment data demonstrates the “massive failure” of the Narendra Modi government.
“The research states that there is a skill gap. We will transform freshers into skilled workers through ‘Pehli Naukri Pakki’. According to a report, a ‘Youth Light’ guarantee of ₹5,000 crore will promote start-ups and create new jobs.
