The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized India’s “independent judiciary” and stated that “fellow democracies” should respect one another’s sovereignty. We vehemently disagree with the statements made by the U.S. State Department Spokesperson regarding specific legal proceedings in India. Countries should respect each other’s independence and not interfere in their internal affairs when they’re doing diplomacy. This is especially important when dealing with other democratic countries.

In response, the MEA stated that it would otherwise create unfavourable precedents. The State Department official hoped that Mr. Kejriwal’s case would be handled in a “timely legal process” on March 25.

In response to an email regarding the case, the U.S. spokeswoman stated, “We encourage a fair, transparent, and timely legal process for Chief Minister Kejriwal.”

The foundation of India’s legal system is an independent court dedicated to prompt, impartial decisions. It is unreasonable to cast doubt on that, the MEA stated on Wednesday.

One day after Sebastian Fischer, the spokesperson for the German Foreign Office, stated that Germany had paid attention to Mr. Kejriwal’s arrest, India called Germany’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Georg Enzweiler. This prompted the U.S. response. The speaker asserted, “We assume and expect that the criteria pertaining to the judiciary’s independence and fundamental democratic principles would also apply in this case.”

India’s remarks on statement made by US on Kejriwal

India strongly protested comments made by a U.S. State Department official regarding Mr. Kejriwal’s arrest on March 27, calling for an appearance of a senior U.S. diplomat.

MEA authorities called Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Gloria Berbena to their South Block office in New Delhi. The meeting went on for more than half an hour.

The Enforcement Directorate took Mr. Kejriwal into custody in connection with a money-laundering case related to the excise policy ‘scam.’ The case revolves around alleged money laundering and corruption during the development and implementation of the 2021–2022 excise policy by the Delhi government, which was later abandoned.
