Guru Nanak Jayanti will be held on Monday, November 27 this year. Sikhs all across the globe commemorate the Sikh festival with great love and devotion.
The Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated every year on the full moon day of Kartik month, also known as Kartik Purnima.
On this day, Parkash Utsav is also observed.
Guru Nanak Dev was born in 1469 in Lahore, Pakistan, in the hamlet of Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, today known as Nankana Sahib. He composed several hymns, which Guru Arjan Dev included in the Adi Granth.
The first Sikh guru visited pilgrimage sites not just in India but also in other areas of Asia.
Guru Nanak Dev has been a devotee of the Divine since he was a child. He dedicated his life to promoting equality and tolerance.
His lectures emphasized the need for selfless devotion to mankind.
The Guru Granth Sahib’s opening words emphasize the reality that the creator of the cosmos is one.
On the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti, Sikhs observe the Akhand Path by reading the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh sacred scripture.
Prabhat Pheris (early morning processions) are organized two days before the festival, with devotees reciting hymns and traveling to the areas.
Devotees also do Nagar kirtan on the day before Guru Nanak Dev’s birth day. The march is led by the Panj Pyare, or five men bearing the Sikh triangular flag, Nishan Sahib.
Throughout the day on Gurpurab, prayers are offered at Gurdwaras. The festival’s multiple components continue until late at night when devotees partake in the langar.
The langar meal is regarded as auspicious, and kada prasad is the customary prasad provided on auspicious occasions.
