Shortly after being taken to the Rani Durgawati Medical College in the Banda district, Mukhtar Ansari died due to heart attack on Thursday.

All About Mukhtar Ansari

Mukhtar Ansari, the 63-year-old son of Subhanullah, was taken unconscious by jail staff to the emergency room of the Rani Durgawati Medical College at approximately 8:25 p.m. The medical bulletin states, “The patient died due to cardiac arrest notwithstanding numerous attempts for recovery. The patient received treatment by a team of nine doctors and was given all available medical facilities.”

The late Ansari was rushed to the hospital earlier on March 26 after he complained of stomach ache. His family subsequently claimed that he had been “poisoned,” and he was later released from the hospital.

Five times as an MLA, Mr. Ansari has been detained since 2005 after being involved in over fifty cases. He is said to be connected to a criminal gang that controls power in the Ghazipur, Mau, and Varanasi regions of eastern Uttar Pradesh. He also engages in rivalry with other influential individuals in the area. The deceased has had seven convictions over the past eighteen months.

An MP/MLA court gave the former MLA a life sentence in jail in June 2023 for the murder of Awadhesh Rai, the brother of Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai. The former MLA was given a 10-year prison term earlier in April 2023 in relation to the kidnapping of Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Nand Kishore Rungta and the 2005 assassination of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai, respectively.

The Uttar Pradesh government claimed to have killed five offenders who were reportedly members of the Ansari group in encounters. Further, they say they have seized properties linked to the group valued at more than ₹600 crore.

Impact of Mukhtar’s Death

Following the former MLA’s killing, the UP police enforced prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). The orders limits large gatherings throughout the State. Police carried out flag marches and deployed more officers in the districts of Mau, Varanasi, and Ghazipur. These are the places where Mukhtar have influence in every possible ways.

The Samajwadi Party regretted the passing. “Mukhtar Ansari, a former MLA, passed away with sadness. I hope his soul is at peace. May the surviving family members find the fortitude to endure this great loss. A humble homage,” the SP writes on X.

Following Mr. Ansari’s passing, former minister and SP leader I.P. Singh petitioned the Supreme Court to transfer Azam Khan. Azam Khan is an SP politician who was imprisoned in Uttar Pradesh. He says, “I request that the Honorable Supreme Court to quickly transfer Shri Azam Khan Sahab, an eight-time MLA, MP, and multiple Cabinet Minister, from the Uttar Pradesh jail to a state that the Bharatiya Janata Party does not rule. The next big conspiracy may involve him. Any citizen’s life is not safe in our country these days,” Mr. Singh wrote in a post on X.
