Sushmita Sen has been in a number of successful films throughout the course of her 30-year career. Ghatak, Biwi No. 1, Main Hoon Na, and many more were among them. However, after appearing in Nirbaak in 2015, Sushmita took an extended vacation from acting. She just returned to acting in 2020, with Ram Madhvani’s action-drama series Aarya.Â

Sushmita chatted with Sonal Kalra (Chief Managing Editor, Entertainment and Lifestyle, Hindustan Times) on Thursday at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2023 about why she took such a lengthy sabbatical from performing.
She was dissatisfied with the job she received.
“I departed movies due to I was frustrated with doing the same and same 201 expressions to 2010.” That was the one and only way to put it. There was one nice song, for example. I was searching for something more. That didn’t sit well with me as I grew older. “I wanted to learn and be a student again,” she explained.
Returning to the classroom
Sushmita then attended acting courses and was a hard worker. “I need them to help me and tell me that you’re terrible at what you do; let me show you how it’s performed correctly.” Aarya did the same just for me. I’d have a 14-hour session, other actors would come and go, and I’d be the constant, simply anxious to learn. Every day for 21 days, I would return home extremely late at night. And I enjoyed it because it meant I was finally learning how to perform my job,” she explained.
Sushmita was also featured in Taali, a film based on the life of trans rights campaigner Shree Gauri Sawant. Sushmita received critical accolades for both Taali and Aarya.
Aarya’s third season will premiere on Disney+ Hotstar on November 3. Sikander Kher also appears in the film.
