Thane:
The battle for control of civic bodies in Thane district is set to intensify as campaigning for elections to six municipal corporations officially begins from Sunday. A total of 3,138 candidates are contesting 594 seats, underlining the high-stakes nature of these polls. Of these, 33 candidates have already been elected unopposed, while the remaining seats are headed for keen contests across the district.
The allotment of election symbols to independent candidates was completed on Saturday, clearing the way for full-scale campaigning on the ground.

Thane Municipal Corporation: 7 Unopposed
In the Thane Municipal Corporation, elections are being held for 131 seats. Seven candidates from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction have been elected unopposed. The remaining wards are expected to witness tight multi-cornered fights as campaigning gathers momentum.
Kalyan-Dombivli: Major Political Face-off
The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation has 122 seats, with 490 candidates in the race. Here, 20 candidates from the ruling Mahayuti alliance have won unopposed — including 14 from the BJP and six from the Shinde Sena. Voting will now be held for the remaining 102 seats.
The contest is shaping up as a key showdown between BJP–Shinde Sena and the Uddhav Sena–MNS alliance, while the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) is contesting independently. The Congress, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) are also testing their strength separately. In a few wards, even BJP and Shinde Sena candidates are locked in direct contests.
Bhiwandi: Triangular Contests Expected
In Bhiwandi, 633 candidates are contesting 90 seats. Six candidates from the Shinde Sena have been elected unopposed. Several wards are expected to see triangular fights involving the BJP–Shinde Sena combine, the Congress, and the Samajwadi Party.
No Unopposed Wins in Ulhasnagar, Mira-Bhayandar and Navi Mumbai
Ulhasnagar has 432 candidates contesting 78 seats, with no unopposed victories reported.
Mira-Bhayandar will see 435 candidates fight for 95 seats, with a direct contest expected between the BJP and Shinde Sena in several wards.
Navi Mumbai has 499 candidates in the fray for 111 seats, and no candidate has been elected unopposed, pointing to intense competition across the city.

Political Stakes High
The civic polls across Thane district are being closely watched as they are seen as a test of the state’s evolving political equations after recent realignments. With alliances, rebels and independents all in play, the coming weeks are expected to see aggressive campaigning and closely fought battles in most wards.
