Thane’s Big Metro Leap Begins Next Month
Thane is finally getting the metro loop it has been waiting for. Construction on the much-anticipated Thane Internal Ring Metro project will kick off in November 2025, marking a major milestone in the city’s push for better urban mobility.
The ₹12,200-crore project, approved by the Union Cabinet in August 2024, will circle around Thane’s western region — connecting key residential, business, and transport hubs like Wagle Estate, Manpada, and Thane Junction. The project is being executed by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro).
A 29-Kilometre Loop Around Thane
The Thane Ring Metro will stretch 29 kilometres and include 22 stations — 20 elevated and 2 underground. The line will run between the Ulhas River and Sanjay Gandhi National Park, ensuring easy access across Thane’s western corridor.
Here’s the full list of planned stations:
Thane Junction, New Thane, Raila Devi, Wagle Circle, Gandhi Nagar, Lokmanya Nagar Bus Depot, Shivai Nagar, Neelkanth Terminal, Kashinath Ghanekar Theatre, Manpada, Dongripada, Vijay Nagari, Waghbil, Water Front, Patlipada, Azad Nagar Bus Stop, Manorama Nagar, Kolshet Industrial Area, Balkum Naka, Balkumpada, Rabodi, and Shivaji Chowk.
If everything stays on track, the metro should be fully operational by 2029.

Boost for Daily Commuters
Once completed, the Thane Internal Ring Metro is expected to serve 6.47 lakh passengers every day in 2029 — a number projected to rise to 8.72 lakh by 2045.
For office-goers, students, and residents tired of the city’s traffic jams, this metro could be a complete game-changer. It aims to reduce congestion, improve travel times, and promote cleaner mobility. Officials say it will also help bring down greenhouse gas emissions — something Thane badly needs as urban traffic continues to grow.
How the Project Will Be Funded
The funding model for this massive project will be a mix of Central and State government contributions, along with loans from bilateral agencies. Maha Metro also plans to generate funds through station naming rights and asset monetization — a strategy used successfully in Pune and Nagpur metro projects.
As of now, tender processes and pre-bid activities are already underway, with contracts expected to be floated soon.

Why This Matters for Thane
The project doesn’t just promise smoother travel — it’s expected to reshape Thane’s infrastructure, attract new investments, and boost real estate values near upcoming metro stations.
For locals, this means shorter commutes, better connectivity to Mumbai, and a step closer to transforming Thane into a self-sustained metropolitan hub within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Bottom Line:
By 2029, the Thane Internal Ring Metro could redefine how the city moves. With 22 new stations and a circular route connecting its busiest areas, this project isn’t just about transport — it’s about building a smarter, cleaner, and more connected Thane.
