    The Union Cabinet decides to merge the Covid scheme with the National Food Security Act (The Free Foodgrain Scheme) until December 2023, Piyush Goyal declares

    At least until December next year, the union government will provide free rations to those covered by the National Food Security Act.

    In essence, the decision is to subsume under the Act the current free-ration scheme – Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana – which was launched in 2020 after Covid affected livelihoods. It covers about 80 crore people.

    Minister Piyush Goyal announced the decision after a Cabinet meeting under PM Narendra Modi, saying that the Yojana had been in effect for 28 months.

    In accordance with the National Food Security Act, rice is available for $3 a kg and wheat for $2, among other rations.

    According to Mr Goyal, the Cabinet has decided to merge the scheme with the National Food Security Act until December 2023.
