Aside from Sachin Tendulkar, other cricketers such as Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, and Dilip Vengsarkar were also invited to the Varanasi stone-laying ceremony.
Cricket star Sachin Tendulkar joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the event to commemorate the laying of the foundation stone for an international cricket stadium in Varanasi. The cricket stadium in Varanasi, which also happens to be PM Modi’s Lok Sabha seat, is another step towards developing modern, world-class sporting facilities, according to officials.
Aside from Sachin Tendulkar, other cricketers such as Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, and Dilip Vengsarkar were also invited to the Varanasi stone-laying ceremony. Key BCCI executives attended the ceremony, including President Roger Binny, Vice President Rajiv Shukla, and Secretary Jay Shah.
The stadium will be built in collaboration with the Yogi Adityanath-led government of Uttar Pradesh and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While the UP government paid 121 crore on land acquisition, the BCCI expects to spend over 330 crore building the international stadium.
The stadium’s thematic structure is inspired by Lord Shiva, with crescent-shaped roof canopies, tridents-shaped floodlights, seating arranged like ghat steps, and metallic sheets on the exterior fashioned like Bilvipatra. The stadium can seat up to 30,000 spectators.
