Air India Phuket-Delhi Flight Suffers Sudden Altitude Drop, 14 Injured in Turbulence Scare

An Air India flight travelling from Phuket to Delhi witnessed a frightening moment on Tuesday after it encountered severe turbulence, causing the aircraft to suddenly lose around 300 feet in altitude. While the plane landed safely in Delhi, 14 people on board—including 10 passengers and four cabin crew members—were injured during the incident.

According to Air India, flight AI2379 experienced a turbulence-related event that briefly changed the aircraft’s altitude. The airline said all passengers and crew safely disembarked after landing at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and no life-threatening injuries were reported.

Sudden Turbulence Leaves Passengers and Crew Injured

The unexpected drop happened while the aircraft was en route from Phuket to Delhi. Officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the pilot reported a sudden loss of approximately 300 feet due to turbulence.

A DGCA official said the incident resulted in one cabin crew member suffering severe injuries, another crew member being injured, and several passengers receiving minor injuries during the sudden altitude change.

The aircraft remained under the pilots’ control throughout the incident and continued its journey before landing safely in Delhi.

14 People Taken for Medical Treatment

An official familiar with the matter said 14 people—10 passengers and four crew members—required medical attention after the flight landed.

Some of the injured were shifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, while others were taken to the India Spinal Injury Centre in Vasant Kunj for further evaluation and treatment.

Delhi airport authorities were alerted before the aircraft arrived, allowing emergency medical teams to be ready as soon as the flight touched down.

Flight Landed Safely in Delhi

According to flight tracking data from FlightRadar24, Air India flight AI2379 departed Phuket at around 8:25 am and landed in Delhi at approximately 11:00 am.

Air India confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and that all passengers and crew members exited the aircraft without any major safety concerns. The airline added that those needing medical assessment were immediately attended to after landing.

DGCA Likely to Review the Incident

Aviation authorities are expected to examine the incident as part of standard safety procedures. Sudden turbulence remains one of the most unpredictable challenges during flight operations, and airlines routinely report such events to the regulator for further assessment.

While turbulence-related injuries are relatively uncommon, experts advise passengers to keep their seat belts fastened whenever seated, even if the seat belt sign is switched off, as unexpected turbulence can occur without warning.

Air India has not reported any damage to the aircraft, and the airline reiterated that passenger safety remains its highest priority.
