“Lost Kingdom” follows Momoa’s Arthur Curry, best known as Aquaman, the half-human, half-Atlantean hero who now rules over Atlantis. In the sequel, he teams up with his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to take on the savage pirate Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II).

“Having failed to take down Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still fueled by the need to avenge his father’s death, is going to stop at nothing to finally defeat Aquaman.” The Black Manta is more powerful than ever this time, wielding the famous Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and lethal force. Aquaman will forge an unusual alliance with his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, in order to defeat him. They must put aside their disagreements to safeguard their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, as well as the entire planet, from irrevocable catastrophe.”

Along with Momoa, Wilson, and Abdul-Mateen, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Temuera Morrison, Willem Dafoe, and Dolph Lundgren will reprise their roles from the first film, with Randall Park reprising his part as Dr. Stephen Shin after making a cameo in the first. Vincent Regan, Indya Moore, and Pilou Asbaek join the cast as well. The sequel will be directed by James Wan again, with the script written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.

The film has gained interest since it is the first major production starring Heard since last year’s highly publicized defamation trial involving the actress and her ex-husband, Johnny Depp. During the trial, Heard alleged that her part was reduced by the studio as a result of the repercussions of her divorce from Depp, which resulted in severe online abuse. She stated that she was paid $1 million for the first “Aquaman” film and $2 million for the sequel, despite the fact that her character was “a very pared-down version.”

However, according to Wan, the “Aquaman” sequel was always intended to center on Arthur and Orm’s relationship: “I always pitched this to everyone from the start.” Arthur and Mera’s trip was the first ‘Aquaman’. Arthur and Orm were always intended to appear in the second film. The first was a romance action-adventure film, and the second was a bromance action-adventure film.”

The sequel to “Aquaman” is the fourth DC film to be released this year, following the underwhelming debuts of “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” “The Flash,” and “Blue Beetle.” New DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are in the process of rebuilding the DC Universe, but no decision on Aquaman or Momoa’s inclusion in the future slate has been made.

“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” will be released in theatres on December 20, 2023. Watch the trailer after the jump.
