Australian Open 2024 Semi-Final: Novak Djokovic Crashes out

Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic and advanced to the Australian Open 2024 final. Prior to today, Djokovic has not lost at Melbourne Park in 33 matches since 2018. However, he was unable to prolong his winning streak. He was only two matches away from an 11th triumph and a record 25th Grand Slam trophy, but he fell short. This was Djokovic’s first semi-final loss at the Australian Open.

Sinner appeared to have an advantage in the first two sets, when he defeated Djokovic 6-2 and 6-2. The third set was a difficult one to break because the Serbian superstar, as always, refused to give up. Djokovic finally prevailed 7-6, and the match proceeded. Sinner won the final set, 6-3.

Sinner became the first Italian player to reach the Australian Open final. He won three of his past four games against Novak. When asked what made his game unique, Sinner said with a grin, “I’m not sure. “Ask him!”

Djokovic’s defeat came following the elimination of second seed Carlos Alcaraz. Alexander Zverev beat Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. Djokovic, famed for his excellent achievements in Melbourne, is the tournament’s top seed, with Sinner coming in fourth. Novak’s Covid vaccination status prevented him from competing at the Australian Open in 2022.

Jannik Sinner has yet to lost a set in the event. The 22-year-old Italian will now compete for his maiden Grand Slam championship. This is not the first time he has defeated Djokovic. He previously defeated Djokovic in the ATP Finals group stage in the Davis Cup.

Sinner stated prior to the semi-final that he considered himself “lucky” to meet Djokovic.

“This is one of the world’s greatest events; I’m excited to play against the world’s number one. He’s won here before, but it’ll be tough,” he told Reuters. “The only thing I can control is that I will give my all and battle for every ball. “We’ll see what happens.”

Alexander Zverev against Daniil Medvedev

Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev will face off later in the day in the second semi-final. Medvedev, who reached his seventh major semi-final, has just one Grand Slam championship to his name, which he won at the 2021 US Open.

Medvedev has a history of excellent results in Melbourne, having reached the finals in both 2021 and 2022. He lost against Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, respectively. Medvedev intended to win the championship this time, with a chance to become the world number two.
