Earthquake of Magnitude 7.2 Strikes China’s Xinjiang; Tremors Detected in Delhi-NCR

Strong vibrations were detected in the Delhi-National Capital Region after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked Southern Xinjiang, China, on Monday night.

“Earthquake of Magnitude:7.2, Occurred on 22-01-2024, 23:39:11 IST, Lat: 40.96 & Long: 78.30, Location: Southern Xinjiang, China, Depth: 80 km, ” the National Center for Seismology said.

Several people were injured, and several houses fell along the Kyrgyzstan-Xinjiang border, according to officials. Following the earthquake, the Xinjiang Railway Department immediately halted operations, along with 27 trains.

According to Chinese media, up to 14 aftershocks of magnitude 3.0 or higher were registered around the epicenter Wushi County in China’s northwest area. The greatest aftershock was 5.3 magnitude and occurred around 17 km from the epicenter.

According to Reuters, Chinese officials launched emergency response services and organized relief operations, including cotton tents, jackets, comforters, mattresses, folding beds, and heating stoves.

In Kazakhstan, the emergency ministry recorded the same earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7.

Residents of Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, evacuated their homes and congregated outside despite the freezing weather, some clad in pajamas and slippers.

The earthquakes were also detected in Uzbekistan, with aftershocks occurring roughly 30 minutes later. No casualties or damages have been recorded in Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan.
