The central government lowered cooking gas prices by ₹200 per cylinder for all domestic users on Tuesday to reign in inflation ahead of important state and general elections. The Union cabinet authorized an extra 200 subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), bringing the total subsidy for Ujjwala scheme participants to 400.

A 14.2-kg LPG cylinder currently costs 1,103 in New Delhi. It will cost 903 starting Wednesday. Similarly, after accounting for the ongoing ₹200 per cylinder subsidy, the price for Ujjwala recipients will be 703.

“PM Modi has decided to reduce the price of domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 200 for all users…this is a gift from PM Narendra Modi to the women of the country on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and Onam,” Union Minister Anurag Thakur stated.

When we first came to power in 2014, just 14.5 crore persons had household LPG connections, according to Thakur. “Today, that number has increased to 33 crore, of which 9.6 crore have been distributed under the Ujjwala scheme,” he said.

In response to the news, BJP president JP Nadda tweeted, “Heartfelt gratitude for the decision taken by the Cabinet beneath the chairmanship of respected Prime Minister @narendramodi drastically cutting the price of cooking gas.”

“Now, Ujjwala beneficiaries will receive LPG at 700, while all other consumers will receive LPG at 900.” On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Modi ji’s gift to our woman strength. “Modi ji’s decision will benefit 33 crore consumers across the country,” he said on X (previously Twitter).
