Gujarati New Year, also known as Varsha Pratipada or Bestu Varas, is considered auspicious by the Gujarati population worldwide. Gujaratis commemorate the beginning of a new year on Shukla Paksha, the Pratipada Tithi of Kartik. It usually occurs with the Govardhan Puja festival. This year, on Tuesday, November 14, the historic anniversary will be honored with considerable fanfare and ceremony. The day is enjoyed to the utmost with delectable delicacies, culinary delights, gatherings, and messages to loved ones.
Gujarati New Year is marked with festivities as well as the shutting of old books and the opening of new ones. These books, known as ‘chopda pooja’ by traditional Gujaratis, are revered in order to usher in a fruitful new year for business. Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped at this pooja in the aim of bringing good prosperity. Nutan Varsh is another name for New Year’s Day in Gujarat.
