Well, there’s a glimmer of hope. If the tournament resumes, it’s likely heading down South.

South India in the Spotlight

According to a fresh report from ESPNcricinfo, the BCCI has picked Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad as the three potential venues to host the remaining 16 matches of IPL 2025—if the league is able to restart later in May.

These cities are being considered because of their solid infrastructure, cricket-loving crowds, and relatively stable environments compared to the current nationwide tension following escalating issues between India and Pakistan.

IPL Suspended Amid Political Tensions

In case you missed it, IPL 2025 was suspended on May 9, during Match 58 between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals. The game was stopped midway, and the BCCI made it official shortly after.

The suspension came after multiple overseas players started leaving the country due to concerns over the political climate. With so much uncertainty, it’s been a tough call for the league’s governing body.

Foreign Players Head Home, WTC Adds Pressure

One of the biggest roadblocks to resuming the league is the availability of foreign players. As soon as the suspension was announced, many boarded flights back home. And with the World Test Championship Final (featuring Australia vs South Africa) coming up on June 11 at Lord’s, a lot of top-tier IPL talent will already be locked in for national duty.

That leaves a very tight window for the IPL to wrap things up—even tighter if the league spills beyond its original final date of May 25.

What’s Left in IPL 2025?

Here’s a quick recap:

  • 16 matches remain, including 12 league games and 4 playoff matches.
  • Hyderabad was supposed to host the Qualifier 1 and Eliminator.
  • Kolkata had the rights for Qualifier 2 and the Final.
  • Match 58 (PBKS vs DC) was abandoned mid-game. No word yet if it’ll be replayed or just marked as a No Result (1 point each).

So… What’s Next?

Honestly? Nobody really knows yet.

The BCCI hasn’t given a concrete update on when—or if—the league will resume. Franchise owners have been informally told about the difficulties of bringing the tournament back under the current circumstances.

But there’s still hope. If things settle down politically, and the logistics work out, we might see IPL 2025 back on our screens later this month—with a Southern twist.
