Jio Is Now the World’s 3rd Fastest Telecom—Beating Out Giants Like Verizon & Vodafone

If you thought your Jio connection was feeling extra speedy lately, you’re not imagining it. According to Opensignal’s latest global report, Reliance Jio has snagged the #3 spot in the world for download speeds among telecom companies that operate across large regions. That’s a massive win—not just for Jio, but for India.

The report looked at data from July to December 2024, and Jio clocked in an average download speed of 97Mbps. Only T-Mobile USA (with a crazy 152.5Mbps) and Telenor Norway (127Mbps) performed better. That means Jio is officially the only Indian telco to make it into this elite global list.

Free 5G = Speed Gamechanger for Jio

So how did Jio pull this off? Simple: free 5G.

Unlike many global operators that charge extra for next-gen network access, Jio has been bundling 5G with its regular prepaid plans—even the ones that start with just 2GB of daily data. This move made high-speed 5G accessible to millions of users without burning a hole in their pocket.

And it’s clearly working. With more people tapping into fast 5G speeds every day, Jio’s nationwide average has shot up, pushing it into the top 3 worldwide.

Airtel Shines Too—But Misses Top Ranks

Now, don’t count out Bharti Airtel just yet. Opensignal also gave Airtel a big shoutout, naming it a “Global Rising Star” thanks to a whopping 68.4% boost in its year-over-year download speeds. That’s huge progress.

Airtel, like Jio, is also offering free 5G with its 2GB daily plans—but there’s a catch. They’ve placed a 300GB cap on 5G usage. While that’s helped them offer a more stable experience to users, it’s possibly why they didn’t climb as high in the global rankings.
