A big section of India’s population still depends on farming. But let’s be real—most small and marginal farmers don’t have a steady income in old age. As the body slows down, working in the fields gets harder and money starts drying up. That’s exactly why the government launched the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Maandhan Yojana (PM-KMY)—a pension scheme designed to give farmers some peace of mind after 60.

What is PM Kisan Maandhan Yojana?
Think of it as a safety net for farmers. Once enrolled, eligible farmers get a fixed pension of ₹3,000 per month after they turn 60. That adds up to ₹36,000 a year—a steady income to cover basic needs without having to depend on others.
The scheme is mainly for small and marginal farmers who often don’t have savings or any retirement plan. And here’s the best part—whatever amount the farmer contributes, the government puts in the same amount.
How Much Do Farmers Need to Contribute?
It’s not a huge burden. Farmers need to deposit a monthly premium between ₹55 and ₹200, depending on their age at the time of joining. The younger you start, the lower your premium.
For example:
- A 30-year-old farmer pays less every month than someone who joins at 45.
- The earlier you sign up, the cheaper it gets in the long run.

How to Apply for PM Kisan Maandhan Yojana?
Applying is pretty straightforward. Farmers just need to head to their nearest Common Service Center (CSC) with these documents:
- Aadhaar Card
- Bank Passbook
- Age Certificate
At the CSC, the farmer’s Aadhaar-based registration will be done. During registration, the farmer pays the first premium, and then a fixed amount is auto-deducted every month.
From age 60 onwards, the pension starts rolling in—₹3,000 every month, guaranteed.
Why This Scheme Matters
For farmers who spend their entire lives feeding the country, retirement can often feel uncertain. The PM Kisan Maandhan Yojana gives them financial stability in their later years. It’s not a huge sum, but it’s regular, reliable, and ensures dignity in old age.
