The Importance of Tulsi Vivah: Celebrating Lord Vishnu’s Marriage to Tulsi

Tulsi vivah refers to Sri Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, and the tulsi plant (holy basil). Tulsi is regarded a manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi in Hindu mythology, and so the unity of Gods and Goddesses is celebrated with tremendous pomp and display throughout the country.

Tulsi vivah has immense religious significance in Hinduism, and on this auspicious day, people perform Tulsi Vivah. Tulsi Vivah is conducted at all Lord Krishna temples, which are decked with flowers and lights. Goddess Tulsi is a holy plant decked with shringar and Lord Vishnu is a sacred stone adorned with flowers. This religious ceremony is carried out by people.

In Vrindavan, Mathura, and Nathdwara, this event is celebrated with considerable pomp and display. A large number of devotees flock to prominent locations to watch this wedding ritual.

Rituals of Tulsi vivah:

The marriage ceremony of Lord Krishna and Tulsi is very similar to any regular Hindu wedding. The rites are performed at numerous temples; however, the Tulsi vivah may be readily performed at home.

The Tulsi vivah witness must fast until the evening when the main festivities begin.

A beautiful mandap is constructed around the tulsi plant using sugarcane stalks and is embellished with colorful rangoli. The Tulsi plant is then lavishly dressed in a vibrant sari, jewelry, and other accessories, precisely like an Indian bride. Tulsi is also treated with vermillion powder and turmeric. A face created on paper is placed on a Tulsi plant, along with a nose ring and bindi.

The groom is either a brass statue or a representation of Lord Vishnu. The ‘Shaligram Stone’, a symbol of Lord Vishnu, is sometimes utilized in the puja. The Lord Krishna/Vishnu figure is then draped in a dhoti.

For this magnificent occasion, a special vegetarian supper is being planned. Most of the puris, rice and dal, red pumpkin veggie, and a superb sweet potato kheer are produced in the home. The prepared food is then stored aside for ‘bhog’ following the conclusion of marital rites.

The formal ceremony begins in the evening. Before the wedding, Lord Vishnu and Tulsi are bathed and decked with flowers as part of the vivaah rite. A yellow thread is used to connect the pair for the ceremony.

A priest can execute the Tulsi vivah ritual, or ladies in the house might perform the puja collaboratively. The rite is open to women of all ages, but only widows are permitted to participate in the Tulsi vivah ceremony. Throughout the wedding ritual, mantras are repeated. Following the end of the marital procedures, followers sprinkle the newlyweds with rice laced with vermillion.

A tulsi aarti is sung after the puja. After the aarti, the prepared meal is served as ‘bhog’ together with fruits. The prasad is subsequently shared among family members and other visitors.

A person who observes the Tulsi vivah should also consume a Tulsi leaf, which represents Goddess Tulsi entering the devotee’s body. Prasad in the shape of sweets is subsequently handed to everyone.
