Bill Gates has explored how artificial intelligence (AI) may affect our jobs in an appearance on Trevor Noah’s “What Now?” program. Gates believes that technology will enable a reduced work week, maybe as few as three days, in which people would not have to work as hard.
Gates believes that in the future, machines will be able to do a wide range of functions, including manufacturing and cooking. He argues that this may evolve to a three-day workweek, providing everyone with a more balanced and pleasant work environment. Other corporate executives believe that technological improvements, particularly in AI, will revolutionize the way we work.

“If you ultimately reach a society where you are required to work three days a week, that’s certainly OK,” Mr. Gates remarked.
While Gates is optimistic about the beneficial improvements that technology may bring, he is equally mindful of the potential drawbacks of AI. In a recent blog article, he discussed the need to employ AI with caution and ethics. While Gates does not believe AI will trigger a massive change like the Industrial change, he does believe it will be as significant as when personal computers were first introduced.
It’s worth noting that Gates isn’t the only one advocating for a shorter work week. Because to AI, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon believes the future generation of workers will only work 3.5 days a week. Dimon also mentioned how technology may help people live longer and better lives.
Gates, who used to consider sleep to be sluggish, discussed how his views have evolved over time. From the age of 18 to 40, he was all about Microsoft, but now he feels that “the purpose of life is not just to do jobs.” This shift in thinking raises larger implications about the importance of employment in our lives and how technology may alter our perceptions.
Some organizations in the United States and other countries are already experimenting with a four-day workweek, and they claim it makes life easier for their staff. As technology advances, questions regarding the future of work and how AI could change things will certainly gain traction, especially with powerful people like Gates and Dimon offering their thoughts on a work culture that prioritizes leisure time.
