The Union Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday that India has authorised the procurement of weapons whose total worth is around Rs 28732 crore. These expenditures will include the carbines, bullet-proof jackets, and armed drone swarms that will be designed and developed in India itself. This is an important step towards achieving our honourable Prime Minister’s dream of “self-reliance in the defence industrial sector”.
The officials who are well versed with the current situation spoke on the condition of anonymity. said: The close-quarter carbines will be used by front-line soldiers who are stationed along India’s borders. These borders include the Line of Actual Control (LAC) as well, where India and China have been involved in a conflict since May 2020.

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), which is India’s leading organisation for procuring firearms, approved the capital acquisition proposals with its Acceptance of Need (AoN) during a meeting presided over by the defence minister, Rajnath Singh. The first step in India’s process for buying military warfare items is AoN, which is made by the council.
The procurement of autonomous surveillance and armed drone swarms was allowed to bolster the army’s capacity in contemporary and unexpected warfare, the defence ministry said in a statement. Moreover, drone technology has proven to be a boon in multiplying force in military operations in recent wars throughout the world.

A large number of drones operating in different formations to locate, encircle, and strike targets, as well as loitering armament, are being developed to meet an important military need of our soldiers. were used by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to demonstrate an indigenous capability to conduct offensive missions in enemy territory last year.
According to the authorities, the army is working with the defence industry on a fresh set of “Make in India” projects, including intelligence and armed drone swarms. Drone swarms are capable of carrying out a range of missions, such as assaults against tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, ammunition storage facilities, fuel depots, and terror launch pads.
The DAC also authorised the purchase of around 400,000 close-quarters carbines, the defence ministry reported, “to combat the present complicated paradigm” of military conflict, irregular warfare, and enforcement at the borders.
The government predicts that this would give India’s small weapons manufacturing sector a major boost and improve Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance). The domestic industry has been given approval for a number of initiatives, and India is moving deliberately, consistently, and intently toward reaching Atmanirbhar Bharat in the defence industry. Frontline troops, according to former military operations director Lieutenant General Vinod Bhatia, are in critical need of carbines.
The bulletproof jackets would improve protection for the soldiers deployed close to the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan.
The DAC has granted an AoN for bullet-proof jackets with the Indian Standard BIS VI level of protection. The reason for this has been stated by ministry, they said – “Analyzing the requirement for additional safety against the danger of counter snipers to our forces deployed along the LoC and in nearer military operations in counter-terrorism situations.” This was why the DAC granted an AoN for capital procurement.
The government has gradually outlawed the import of approximately 300 different types of weapons and equipment. Some of these include naval utility helicopters, artillery guns, missiles, destroyers, ship-borne cruise missiles, and light transport aircraft; long-range land-attack, basic trainer aircraft, assault rifles, sniper rifles, particular kinds of helicopters, next-generation corvettes, and airborne early warning and control systems.
