Prashant Kishor Ahead in Early Trends
Vote counting began at 8 a.m. on Monday under tight security arrangements at the designated counting centre in Patna. According to the initial rounds of counting, Prashant Kishor was leading over BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha and remained ahead through the first seven rounds.
The final outcome, however, will depend on the remaining rounds of counting, and election officials have urged people to wait for the official declaration of results.

Why the Bankipur Bypoll Was Held
The by-election became necessary after BJP national president Nitin Nabin resigned from the Bankipur Assembly seat in April following his election to the Rajya Sabha.
Nabin had represented the constituency for several terms and won the seat for the fifth consecutive time in the November 2025 Bihar Assembly election. He had defeated Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Rekha Gupta by a margin of more than 50,000 votes.
With the seat falling vacant, the Election Commission announced the bypoll, which was conducted on July 30.
A Key Test for Jan Suraaj
The Bankipur bypoll marks Prashant Kishor’s first-ever electoral contest after years of working as one of India’s best-known political strategists.
After launching the Jan Suraaj Party, Kishor has repeatedly said he wants to build a new political alternative in Bihar. A strong performance in Bankipur could give his party a significant boost ahead of future elections in the state.
For the BJP, the contest is equally important. The party has held this Assembly segment continuously since 1995, when it was known as Patna West, making the constituency one of its traditional strongholds.
BJP and RJD in the Race
The BJP fielded Neeraj Kumar Sinha, a youth wing leader, to defend the seat after Nitin Nabin’s resignation.
The RJD once again nominated Rekha Gupta, who had finished second in the previous Assembly election. In total, 26 candidates are contesting the by-election.

Voter Turnout Lower Than Last Election
Polling for the Bankipur by-election was held on July 30 and recorded a voter turnout of 34.30%.
The figure was notably lower than the 41.45% turnout recorded during the 2025 Bihar Assembly election, indicating reduced voter participation in the bypoll.
What Happens Next?
Counting will continue through multiple rounds before the Election Commission announces the official result. While the early trends suggest an advantage for Prashant Kishor, the final outcome will only be confirmed after all Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes are counted.
