Blue Origin’s Big Mars Moment
Jeff Bezos’s space company Blue Origin is preparing for one of its most ambitious missions yet — launching a rocket to Mars. The company’s massive New Glenn rocket has rolled out to the pad at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, signaling that liftoff isn’t far away.
This will be New Glenn’s second-ever flight and its first interplanetary mission, carrying NASA’s ESCAPADE probes to the Red Planet. The launch window is expected to open in late October or early November 2025.

What Makes This Mission Special
At 320 feet tall, New Glenn is Blue Origin’s answer to SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy — a heavy-lift, reusable rocket designed to carry large payloads beyond Earth’s orbit.
This time, it’s not just about reaching orbit. It’s about flying to Mars. The rocket will attempt to deliver NASA’s twin ESCAPADE spacecraft — short for Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers — into Martian orbit.
These twin orbiters, nicknamed Blue and Gold, are built by Rocket Lab and are designed to study how solar wind and radiation affect Mars’ thin atmosphere. The data could be crucial for future human missions to Mars and understanding how the planet lost most of its atmosphere over time.
A Comeback Launch for Blue Origin
The first New Glenn test flight earlier this year was a success, but its booster recovery attempt failed. For this Mars mission, the company aims to change that — trying once again to land its first stage, “Never Tell Me the Odds,” on its ocean drone ship Jacklyn.
Blue Origin says it has made several upgrades since the last attempt, hoping to nail both the mission and the landing this time around.
Why NASA Chose Blue Origin
NASA’s decision to put ESCAPADE on Blue Origin’s launch manifest is a major show of trust. For years, Blue Origin has lagged behind SpaceX in real-world missions. But a successful Mars delivery would put Bezos’s company firmly on the map in the global space race.
The mission could also open the door for more interplanetary contracts, establishing New Glenn as a serious contender in the commercial heavy-launch sector.

The Countdown Begins
The ESCAPADE spacecraft arrived in Florida in late September and are now undergoing final integration. Once attached to the rocket, they’ll be ready for a historic journey that could redefine private space exploration.
If all goes as planned, late October or early November will see Blue Origin make headlines worldwide — not just for launching a rocket, but for pushing humanity a little closer to Mars.
