Two tribal women were allegedly gang-raped and killed in Manipur, and a viral video showing nude women being paraded by men has gone viral. Six people have been arrested.
According to media reports, two tribal women were allegedly gang-raped and killed in violence-plagued Manipur on the same day a viral video of two nude women being paraded by a dozen men in the northeast state circulated on social media platforms.
According to accounts, the victims were from Manipur’s Kangpokpi district and worked in a car wash in Imphal. The ladies were reportedly abducted, gang-raped, and killed at their job on May 4.Â
The mother of one of the victims submitted a complaint at the Saikul authorities Station on May 5, but authorities did not file an FIR until May 16. According to the FIR, the suspects were charged under different sections of the IPC, including 302 (murder), 375 (rape), 366 (kidnapping), and others.
On May 4, two Kuki women were paraded naked by a crowd in Manipur’s Thoubal district before being gang-raped. Almost two months after the event, the video became viral on social media, eliciting outrage across the country and prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make a pointed remark.
According to reports, the event occurred shortly after confrontations in Churachandpur, where the Kuki community had protested against a plan to award the majority Meitei clan scheduled tribal status.
On July 19, Manipur Police took suo moto cognizance of the video and notified that a case had been launched at the Nongpok Sekmai police station in the Thoubal district on accusations of abduction, gang rape, and murder.
The FIR filed in this case, a copy of which PTI obtained, disclosed a story of mayhem before to the kidnapping and despicable behavior with tribal women, a video of which has now formed the basis of raids and arrests of those linked with the event.
