Same-sex marriage update LIVE Today, the Supreme Court will issue its long-awaited decision on petitions seeking legal recognition for same-sex marriage. After a 10-day marathon hearing, a five-judge constitution bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and includes Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli, and P S Narasimha reserved its judgment on the petitions on May 11.
During the marathon hearings, petitioners through senior advocates such as Mukul Rohatgi, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Anand Grover, Raju Ramachandran, Geeta Luthra, KV Viswanathan, Saurabh Kirpal, and Menaka Guruswamy emphasized the LGBTQIA+ community’s equality rights and pushed to recognize such a union that would ensure LGBTQIA lead a “dignified” life-like heterosexuals.

Meanwhile, the Centre has argued that India’s legal policy has purposefully approved a union only between a biological man and a biological woman. On May 3, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it would form a committee led by the cabinet secretary to investigate administrative procedures that may be done to alleviate “genuine concerns” of same-sex couples without addressing the matter of legalizing their marriage.
