AI is now one of the most prominent topics in the technology business. From OpenAI to Microsoft, Google, and Meta, almost all of the big technology companies are focusing on incorporating new AI technologies into their product lines, including smartphones. Last year, Google introduced the Pixel 8 series, which emphasized AI-powered capabilities, while this year, Samsung revealed AI advancements for its Galaxy S24 line. Despite all of the AI excitement, Apple looks to be trailing behind.
The Cupertino tech behemoth debuted its iPhone 15 series last year with significant enhancements, but made no specific announcements highlighting AI. However, Apple’s journey toward AI is not far off. The business is apparently prepared for a large increase of AI announcements, beginning with the impending iOS 18 upgrade. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to launch the iOS 18 upgrade during WWDC in June 2024, and this time the update will be much larger, delivering a slew of new AI-centric capabilities to iPhones. “I’m told that the new operating system is seen inside the company as one of the biggest iOS updates-if not the biggest-in the company’s history,” Gurman went on to say.

In his weekly Power On email, Gurman said that iOS 18 will give the iPhone a much-needed facelift, satisfying “many longstanding requests from users, developers, and regulators.”
One of the most significant enhancements will be increased usage of generative AI, which will make Siri smarter and more powerful. Earlier reports suggested that Apple would employ a Large Language Model for Siri, allowing it to execute complicated tasks.
But that’s not all. Gurman claims that iOS 18 will add “a lot more” to the iPhone. According to him, Craig Federighi, Apple’s software engineering leader, warned his colleagues last year that the operating system, dubbed Crystal, will have significant improvements throughout.

Notably, while Apple hasn’t officially announced anything yet, based on previous releases and their tendency to keep quiet until launch, we’ll most likely only have a peek of iOS 18’s full capabilities, including its non-AI features, during WWDC. However, current rumors and insights indicate that Apple has much more planned than the previously disclosed AI breakthroughs.
