Jalpaiguri storm: At roughly 3:30 pm, the storm, which lasted for around ten minutes, smashed villages spanning a few square kilometers. In two locations in the Jalpaiguri district of north Bengal on Sunday afternoon, heavy norwester severely damaged dwellings, resulting in five fatalities—including one lady.
Mamata Banerjee On Jalpaiguri Storm
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived in Jalpaiguri on Sunday night after postponing her planned events. The storm also caused damage to several houses.
According to the media, Mamata Banerjee stated the storm resulted in five deaths, and two persons are in critical condition. Further, many houses were damaged too.
She adds, “Right now, the administration is offering the support that’s required to support the victims. The biggest damage that has occurred is the people’s death”. Further, she expressed her gratitude to the administration for their efforts in disaster management. The hospital staff, including the physicians and nurses, is doing a great job.
It was reported that Jalpaiguri Medical College and Hospital admitted up to 170 injured patients. About 200 people were sent to the Maynaguri Hospital, and another 100 got treatment at the Barnesh Health Center.
There were no reported casualties despite similar storms hitting other areas of the nearby districts of Aliupurduar and Cooch Behar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the deaths caused by the storm. Modi claimed to have met with officials and asked them to make sure individuals impacted by it receive the necessary support.
Shama Parveen, the Jalpaiguri district magistrate, announced earlier in the day that four deaths had occurred until now. The victims were identified as Dwijendra Narayan Sarkar (52), Anima Roy (49), Jogen Roy (70), and Samar Roy (64).
According to Raj Bhavan authorities, Governor CV Ananda Bose will visit the damaged areas in Jalpaiguri on Monday.
