Mumbai, June 9:
A regular Monday morning turned tragic for Mumbai commuters when eight passengers fell off an overcrowded local train near Mumbra station. The incident happened around 9:30 AM and has left at least 13 people injured, with several feared dead, according to early reports.
What Happened Near Mumbra Station?
According to Central Railway officials, the incident took place between Mumbra and Diva stations in Thane district. Passengers traveling on the footboard of two trains—one heading toward Kasara and another toward Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)—reportedly collided with each other while passing on adjacent tracks.
“People travelling on footboards got entangled when the trains passed each other,” said Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway.
Although there wasn’t an actual train collision, the close proximity and heavy crowding led to passengers losing balance and falling off the train.

Overcrowding Likely to Blame
The Central Railways admitted that overcrowding may have been the root cause of this tragedy. Mumbai’s local trains are infamous for being jam-packed during rush hours, often forcing commuters to hang onto footboards just to catch their ride.
“The distance between two trains is about 1.5–2 meters, but curves can make trains tilt slightly, possibly leading to this kind of contact,” explained Nila.
Injured Rushed to Hospital
Railway officials and police quickly reached the spot and helped move the injured to nearby hospitals. As per updates, 13 people have been officially reported injured. However, eyewitnesses and some police officials fear that the number of casualties could rise.
PTI reported that at least three passengers are feared dead, although this hasn’t been officially confirmed by the railways.

Local Train Services Disrupted
The accident also affected local train services on the Central line, causing delays and chaos for daily commuters during peak morning hours.
“Local services have also been affected by the incident,” Central Railways confirmed in a brief statement.
Investigation Underway
An investigation has been launched to figure out exactly what went wrong. Authorities are looking into whether negligence, overcrowding, or poor infrastructure played a role.
Meanwhile, visuals shared by ANI from the Mumbra Railway Station show emergency teams and distressed passengers trying to make sense of the sudden tragedy.
A Wake-Up Call for Mumbai’s Train System?
This isn’t the first time Mumbai’s lifeline—the local train system—has been under scrutiny. Overcrowding and lack of safety measures have long been a concern, especially during rush hours.
Monday’s incident once again highlights the urgent need for better crowd control, more frequent services, and strict enforcement of safety norms on local trains.
