IPL 2026 Auction Date Likely Between Dec 13–15, Retention Deadline Set for Nov 15: Report

IPL 2026 Auction Window Likely Set for Mid-December

The much-anticipated IPL 2026 auction is just around the corner — and it looks like the BCCI has almost finalised the dates. According to a report by Cricbuzz, the Indian Premier League governing body is eyeing the December 13–15 window to conduct the auction for the upcoming season.

While the schedule isn’t officially confirmed yet, sources suggest the board wants to wrap up the process before the Christmas week to allow teams ample preparation time ahead of the new season.

Retention Deadline: November 15

Franchises have reportedly been informed that November 15 will be the player retention deadline. By then, all 10 IPL teams must submit their list of retained and released players to the BCCI.

This means teams have barely a month to make some tough calls — and early chatter indicates some big names could be on the release list. Among those rumoured to be released are Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tripathi, and Sam Curran.

Interestingly, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will enter the auction with a slight advantage. The franchise reportedly has an extra ₹9.75 crore in their purse, thanks to the retirement of veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin earlier this year.

Auction May Return to India

While the 2023 and 2024 IPL auctions were held in Dubai and Saudi Arabia, respectively, reports suggest the 2026 edition could be hosted in India. The BCCI has reportedly ruled out any overseas venue for now, favouring a domestic location to streamline logistics and fan engagement.

If confirmed, this will mark the first time since 2022 that the mega auction returns to Indian soil — a move that could inject renewed excitement among local fans and franchises.

Teams Gearing Up for Big Changes

There’s also buzz around a potential reshuffle at Rajasthan Royals. The 2008 champions are reportedly considering releasing Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, though the final decision may depend on Kumar Sangakkara’s strategic vision as he’s expected to return as the team’s head coach.

Questions also linger over Sanju Samson’s captaincy, though no official statement has been made yet. For most other teams, however, major shakeups are unlikely, with managements preferring continuity ahead of the 2026 season.

What’s Next?

With the IPL 2026 auction dates now clearer, all eyes are on the retention deadline. Expect a flurry of trade rumours, player swaps, and strategic decisions in the coming weeks as franchises fine-tune their lineups.

If the reported dates hold, December 13–15, 2025, will see intense bidding wars once again — with fresh combinations, new captains, and, as always, some surprise million-dollar buys lighting up the cricketing calendar.
