Hyundai is finally gearing up to enter one of the hottest EV segments in India—and it’s aiming straight at the Tata Punch EV. At its first-ever CEO Investor Day outside Korea, the brand confirmed that a new compact electric SUV will debut in 2027, designed and built in India.
Hyundai’s Entry-Level EV for India
This upcoming model will be Hyundai’s most affordable electric SUV yet, likely based on the Inster sold in Europe. Internally, it’s being tagged as an A+ segment EV, sitting below the Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400 in terms of size and pricing.
The car will be designed specifically for Indian buyers, with a localized supply chain and components, making it more accessible and cost-efficient. In short, Hyundai is finally building an EV from scratch for India, rather than just electrifying existing models like the Creta.

Features That Could Set It Apart
While Hyundai hasn’t revealed full details, early buzz suggests this compact EV won’t cut corners on tech and comfort. Expect features like:
- Level 2 ADAS (a first in its class)
- 360-degree camera
- 6 airbags as standard
- Large touchscreen infotainment system
- Premium extras like sunroof and ventilated seats
This could make it one of the most feature-rich EVs in the budget-friendly segment.
Shared DNA with Kia Syros EV
To keep costs in check, Hyundai’s new EV is expected to share its platform and components with the upcoming Kia Syros EV. That means we might see two battery options—42 kWh and 49 kWh—delivering a range of 300 km and 355 km, respectively, on a single charge.
Like the Punch EV, this will be a front-wheel-drive SUV. But going by Hyundai’s pricing strategy, it could undercut the Syros EV by a couple of lakhs, directly challenging Tata’s segment leader.

Why It Matters for India
Right now, Hyundai’s EV lineup in India consists of the Creta EV and the premium Ioniq 5. The Kona EV was phased out last year. With the addition of this compact SUV—plus electric versions of the Venue and Grand i10 Nios—Hyundai will finally have a complete EV portfolio covering multiple price points.
And given how well the Tata Punch EV has been doing, Hyundai’s entry in 2027 could be the competition buyers have been waiting for.
