Scotland finally have their long-awaited FIFA World Cup moment.
Steve Clarke’s side ended a 36-year wait for a victory on football’s biggest stage after edging Haiti 1-0 in their Group C opener on Saturday. A first-half goal from John McGinn proved to be the difference in a closely fought contest that saw Scotland survive late pressure to secure all three points.
The result puts Scotland at the top of Group C and marks their first World Cup win since defeating Sweden at Italia ’90, giving fans another memorable chapter in the nation’s football history.

McGinn Delivers the Decisive Moment
Scotland looked lively from the opening whistle and nearly struck early through Ben Doak, whose low shot forced a smart save from Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide.
After weathering a brief spell of Haitian pressure, Scotland came even closer when Scott McTominay’s first-time effort crashed against the post.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 28th minute. Placide made an excellent stop to deny Che Adams from close range, but the rebound fell kindly for John McGinn. His shot took two deflections before looping into the net, handing Scotland the lead and making McGinn the oldest Scottish scorer in FIFA World Cup finals history.
Haiti Fight Back but Can’t Find an Equaliser
Scotland nearly doubled their advantage before half-time when Lawrence Shankland headed narrowly wide from another dangerous Ben Doak delivery.
Haiti, however, refused to back down. Ruben Providence tested Angus Gunn with a powerful strike that the Scottish goalkeeper spilled before defenders reacted quickly to clear the danger.
The second half was tighter, with chances limited but the intensity never dropping.
Andy Robertson delivered an inviting cross that found Doak at the back post, only for Martin Experience to produce a crucial block. Shortly after, McGinn had another opportunity to seal the match but dragged his effort wide under pressure.

Late Pressure Keeps Scotland on Edge
Haiti threw everything forward during the closing stages and came agonisingly close to grabbing a historic equaliser.
Wilson Isidor narrowly missed connecting with a dangerous Providence cross, while Frantzdy Pierrot’s glancing header drifted just wide of the target.
Despite the late scare, Scotland stayed organised and held firm until the final whistle, securing a valuable opening victory in their first FIFA World Cup appearance since 1998.
What Comes Next?
Scotland will now prepare for a crucial Group C clash against Morocco on 19 June after the North Africans shared points with Brazil in an entertaining 1-1 draw.
Haiti, meanwhile, face an even tougher challenge as they prepare to take on five-time world champions Brazil in their second group-stage fixture, hoping to bounce back from an encouraging but ultimately disappointing performance.
