Thane Civic Body Expands CSM Hospital’s Maternity Ward to 90 Beds Amid Rising Deliveries

Thane’s CSM Hospital Gears Up for More Deliveries

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has stepped up its healthcare efforts by expanding the maternity ward at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital (CSM Hospital) to 90 beds. The move comes as the number of women arriving for deliveries continues to climb every month.

The civic-run hospital isn’t just serving Thane residents — it’s also handling patients from Thane Rural and Palghar districts, adding to the daily rush. According to TMC officials, the expansion was essential to ensure smoother operations and better maternal care.

Rising Deliveries Push Capacity to the Limit

On average, about 18 deliveries take place daily at CSM Hospital. But in October, that number jumped to 22 per day, sometimes crossing 90 women admitted at once — far beyond the available 70-bed limit in the postpartum ward.

“On several occasions, all 70 beds were occupied, and we had to accommodate extra patients wherever possible,” an official shared. “Expanding to 90 beds will ease the pressure and improve care quality.”

Focus on Modern Facilities in Mumbra

Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has also directed that the Swatantra Sainik Hakim Ajmal Khan Hospital in Mumbra be upgraded and turned into an extended center of CSM Hospital.

During a high-level review meeting, Rao emphasized the need for modern maternity infrastructure and asked officials to draw up a comprehensive plan to strengthen maternal health services across the city.

The move aims to reduce crowding at CSM Hospital and make maternity care more accessible to women in the Mumbra region.

A Step Toward Better Civic Healthcare

With around 200 outpatients visiting the obstetrics department daily, the expansion comes as a major relief for both doctors and expectant mothers.

Healthcare officials say the next step is upgrading medical equipment, improving patient amenities, and ensuring round-the-clock specialist availability.

This development underscores TMC’s push to modernize civic hospitals and provide accessible, quality maternal care for Thane’s growing population.

Axpert Media Comment – Strengthening Women’s Healthcare in Thane

Axpert Media notes that this expansion marks a positive, people-first step in Thane’s healthcare evolution. Increasing bed capacity at a crucial maternity hub like CSM Hospital reflects the administration’s proactive approach toward maternal safety and urban health management.

In a city witnessing rapid population growth, investment in civic hospitals is not just an infrastructural upgrade but a social commitment. Ensuring that mothers and newborns receive dignified care, even in public hospitals, enhances public trust in local governance and strengthens the foundation of equitable healthcare.

From an editorial perspective, this decision by TMC deserves recognition — but consistent maintenance, trained staff, and long-term investment will be key to turning this expansion into a sustainable success.
