Bilaspur Train Accident: What Happened
A tragic railway accident in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district left at least seven people dead and over 25 injured after a passenger train rammed into a goods train from behind on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 4 PM near Lal Khadan, located between Gatora and Korba stations on the Bilaspur–Korba route. According to officials, the Bilaspur MEMU local train was on its way from Gevra Road to Bilaspur when it collided with the stationary goods train ahead of it.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as the MEMU’s engine climbed onto the rear coach of the goods train, crushing several compartments.
Collector Confirms 7 Deaths; Eyewitnesses Claim Higher Toll
Bilaspur Collector Sanjay Agarwal confirmed the deaths of seven passengers so far, though local witnesses fear the number could be higher — possibly over ten. More than 25 passengers sustained serious injuries and have been rushed to Railway Hospital, SIMS, and Apollo Hospital in Bilaspur.
Officials added that women and children were among those trapped inside the mangled compartments. Rescue teams used gas cutters to free passengers who were stuck in the wreckage.

Rescue Operations and Delayed Train Services
By Tuesday evening, joint rescue operations by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and district administration were in full swing. Several coaches had to be cut open to reach survivors.
The accident also damaged overhead wires and signal systems, bringing traffic on the Bilaspur–Korba line to a complete halt. Railway officials confirmed that multiple trains have been cancelled or diverted until further notice.
Investigation Underway
A preliminary probe suggests both trains ended up on the same track due to a possible signalling error or miscommunication between control stations. The South East Central Railway (SECR) has ordered an official inquiry to determine the exact cause of the collision.
Senior railway officials, including Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) and technical teams, have reached the site. Restoration work is expected to take several hours.
Ground Reality: Eyewitnesses Describe Chaos
Passengers on board said they heard a loud screech followed by a massive jolt as the MEMU local suddenly rammed into the goods train. “There was smoke everywhere, and people were screaming for help,” said one survivor. “We broke windows to get out.”
Locals from nearby areas rushed to help before rescue teams arrived, providing water and first aid to injured passengers.
