Abhishek Sharma just can’t stop making headlines. The young Indian opener smashed yet another fiery knock against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2025 Super Four clash in Dubai on Friday, September 26, and in the process, he etched his name alongside two modern greats—Rohit Sharma and Mohammad Rizwan.
The 23-year-old left-hander scored a blistering 61 runs from just 31 balls, bringing up his third straight half-century of the tournament. But what made this innings extra special is that Abhishek has now equalled the world record for seven consecutive 30-plus scores in T20Is, a feat previously achieved only by Rohit and Rizwan.
Abhishek’s Golden Run Continues
Every time Abhishek walks out to bat, he seems to be rewriting records. On Friday, he not only equalled the global milestone but also went past Virat Kohli and Rizwan to claim the record for most runs in a single T20 Asia Cup edition.
Before the match, he was just 34 runs shy of Rizwan’s 281-run tally from 2022. By the end of his 61-run innings, he stormed to the top of the list with 309 runs in six innings—a new benchmark for the tournament.
Here’s how the list looks now:
- Abhishek Sharma: 309 runs in six innings (2025)
- Mohammad Rizwan: 281 runs in six innings (2022)
- Virat Kohli: 276 runs in five innings (2022)
- Ibrahim Zadran: 196 runs in five innings (2022)
- Babar Hayat: 194 runs in three innings (2016)

India vs Sri Lanka – What Happened at the Toss
Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka won the toss and put India into bat, admitting that his team couldn’t qualify for the final but still wanted to finish strong. “It’s a good pitch and we want to restrict them to 170-175,” he said.
On the other hand, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav wasn’t too fussed. “We were actually looking to bat first. The atmosphere is great, and the boys are looking forward to it,” he added. India made two changes, bringing in Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana for Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube.
Why This Matters
Abhishek’s rise is turning into one of the biggest stories of the Asia Cup 2025. Not only has he been India’s most consistent batter, but his aggressive approach in the powerplay has given the team a massive edge heading into the final stages of the tournament.
With every game, he’s proving that he’s not just a temporary hot streak—he’s here to stay. And if he keeps this up, records set by legends like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli may not remain untouched for long.
