Why Muhurat Trading Is More Than Just Trading

This tradition dates back to 1957, when the Bombay Stock Exchange first introduced Muhurat Trading. The National Stock Exchange later joined in 1992.

Back then, brokers performed Chopda Pujan — the worship of account books — during Lakshmi Pujan, seeking prosperity and financial blessings. Marwari traders would sell stocks symbolically, while Gujarati traders made small purchases to mark good fortune.

Today, while the rituals may have evolved, the sentiment remains timeless — Muhurat Trading is still seen as the perfect moment to start fresh investments and pray for wealth in the year ahead.

What Happens During the Session

The session isn’t just a casual market run. It’s organized like a standard trading day, packed into an hour:

  1. Block Deal Session – Bulk trades between two parties.
  2. Pre-Open Session – Price discovery before live trading.
  3. Normal Market Session – The main one-hour trading window.
  4. Call Auction Session – For less-liquid stocks.
  5. Closing Session – Orders at the closing price.

The energy during this session is electric — a blend of excitement and optimism as retail investors, institutional traders, and market veterans place symbolic trades to mark the new Samvat year.

Settlement Rules: Just Like Any Other Trading Day

The NSE and BSE have made it clear: all trades executed during the Muhurat session will follow normal settlement obligations.

That means —
Stocks you buy will be delivered as usual.
Stocks you sell must be settled just like on any business day.

There are no exemptions or special rules — only the festive charm that makes this one of the most awaited sessions of the year.

A Moment of Sentiment and Strategy

Beyond rituals and beliefs, Muhurat Trading often sets the tone for investor sentiment in the new year. The market usually opens on a positive note, driven by festive optimism and fresh inflows from both retail and institutional participants.

Even if the trades are small, they carry emotional and cultural significance — many first-time investors enter the markets during this session, treating it as a lucky beginning.

Final Take

At its heart, Muhurat Trading 2025 is a celebration of both prosperity and participation — a symbolic hour where India’s financial and cultural spirit come together.

So whether you’re buying your first share or simply observing the market’s festive buzz, October 21 promises to be a special day on Dalal Street.
