Mumbai Rain Update: IMD Issues Red Alert as City Braces for More Downpour

Mumbai, August 18 – It’s been pouring non-stop, and it looks like the rain gods aren’t letting up anytime soon. After back-to-back days of heavy showers, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for Mumbai and the suburbs, warning residents to brace for more rain, waterlogging, and gusty winds.

What’s Happening Right Now

The city woke up to yet another wet morning, with the IMD’s 10:30 am update predicting heavy rain through the day. While the skies might ease up briefly, very heavy showers are expected to hit again by afternoon and evening.

Traffic has already taken a beating – the Western Express Highway moved at a snail’s pace near Vile Parle, and knee-deep water was reported in Sion’s Gandhi Market area. Commuters are advised to check routes before stepping out.

The Forecast You Need to Know

  • Next 24 hours: Moderate to heavy rain across Mumbai and suburbs, with the chance of very heavy spells in a few pockets. Watch out for gusty winds at 40–50 kmph. Temps: Max 28°C, Min 24°C.
  • Next 48 hours: The pattern continues with heavy rain likely at night, winds picking up, and temperatures hovering around 27°C and 24°C.

The IMD has also highlighted risks for nearby regions. Konkan-Goa may see heavy to extremely heavy showers, Marathwada can expect thunderstorms with lightning, and even the Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra are on alert.

Warning for Fishermen

Coastal winds are rough. Today (Aug 18), squally weather with winds of 45–55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, is expected along the North Konkan coast. Between August 19–21, conditions get even trickier with wind speeds of 50–60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph. Fisherfolk are strictly advised to avoid venturing into the sea until further notice.
