G20 Summit 2023 LIVE Updates: The African Union formally joined the G20 on Saturday at the request of summit host and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The first to arrive were UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director and Chairman Kristalina Georgieva, and World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Earlier on Friday, India’s sherpa Amitabh Kant stated that the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration of the G20 is nearly complete and would be given to the grouping’s leaders to win consensus.
Kant told a news conference prior to the G20 Leaders’ Summit on September 9-10 that he would release further details about the declaration, also known as a joint communiqué, if it was agreed by the leaders. He did, however, state that the proclamation would incorporate the voice of the global south and poor nations.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina met in New Delhi. The two nations have inked three memorandums of understanding (MoUs), including one on digital payment methods cooperation.
Meanwhile, US Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Delhi on Friday to attend the G20 Summit, which will be headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After PM Modi landed in India, US President Biden and Janet Yellen met with him behind closed doors on Friday.
In the face of China’s expanding military power in the area, the Quad of India, the United States, Japan, and Australia have been focused on practical collaboration to preserve a free and open Indo-Pacific.
