India’s prepaid mobile users are quietly paying more for less. In a fresh round of revisions, major telecom operators — Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL — have tweaked their prepaid plans. The changes range from reduced validity and higher prices to trimmed benefits, and they all point in the same direction: higher effective costs for users.
If you’re someone who relies on budget recharges, here’s what’s actually changed—and why your wallet might feel the pinch.
Jio Cuts Validity, Raises Effective Cost
The biggest talking point is Jio’s Rs 195 Cricket Data Pack. Earlier valid for 90 days, it now lasts just 30 days—while still offering the same 15GB data.
That means users who depended on this pack long-term are now effectively paying three times more per month.
Other Jio cricket packs have also been reshuffled:
- Rs 100 pack now gives 6GB (up from 5GB), 30-day validity
- Rs 79 pack offers 3GB for 30 days
- Rs 149 pack gives 10GB with a 90-day JioHotstar mobile subscription
The key shift? Most data packs now max out at 30 days validity, making long-term value harder to find.

Airtel’s 84-Day Plan Gets Pricier
Airtel has quietly discontinued its Rs 799 plan and bumped up the Rs 859 plan to Rs 899.
The revised Rs 899 plan includes:
- 1.5GB data per day
- Unlimited calling
- 100 SMS per day
- 84 days validity
On paper, the benefits look the same. But there’s a catch.
The RewardsMini cashback benefit—worth around Rs 80 per month—is gone. That’s a noticeable drop in overall value, even if the core plan remains unchanged.
BSNL Trims Validity on Budget Packs
BSNL has once again reduced the validity of its entry-level plans:
- Rs 107 plan: now 20 days (down from 22 days, and earlier 35 days)
- Rs 197 plan: now 35 days (down from 42 days), but data increased from 4GB to 5GB
While the data bump in the Rs 197 plan offers some relief, the steady decline in validity continues to impact budget users the most.
Vodafone Idea Makes Wide-Ranging Changes
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has rolled out some of the most aggressive revisions across multiple circles.
Key changes include:
- Rs 649 plan increased to Rs 670 in several states
- Chennai plan hiked from Rs 1020 to Rs 1050
More importantly, Vi has downgraded several “NonStop Hero” plans to “Hero Unlimited.”
What does that mean?
Earlier, users got unlimited high-speed data. Now, plans come with daily caps—often around 2GB/day—after which speed drops to 64 Kbps.
Plans affected include:
Rs 696, Rs 795, Rs 979, Rs 994, Rs 996, Rs 998, and Rs 1198 across select circles.
Vi has also removed its Rs 1197 NonStop Hero plan in most regions, replacing it with a Rs 1005 alternative in limited circles.

What This Means for Users
Across all four operators, the pattern is clear:
- Validity is shrinking
- Prices are inching up
- Benefits are being trimmed
For users, especially those on tight budgets, this means higher monthly spending for the same usage.
The telecom industry has been under pressure to improve revenues, and these changes suggest operators are gradually moving towards higher average revenue per user (ARPU).
For now, there’s no single “best value” plan—only slightly better trade-offs depending on your usage.
