Mohsin Naqvi Hands Trophy To UAE Board As BCCI Pushes For His Removal

Trophy Row After Asia Cup Final

The Asia Cup 2025 might be over, but the real drama has just begun. Instead of India celebrating their big win with the trophy, it ended up in the hands of the UAE cricket board—thanks to Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi.

Naqvi, who also heads the Pakistan Cricket Board, refused to hand over the trophy to the Indian team after the final in Dubai. According to NDTV sources, he even took the trophy and medals to his hotel room, sparking outrage within the cricketing world.

BCCI Wants Naqvi Out

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) isn’t letting this slide. In a heated virtual ACC meeting, officials Rajeev Shukla and Ashish Shelar confronted Naqvi, making it clear that the trophy belonged to the Indian team—not to him or any board.

Now, the BCCI is actively seeking his impeachment, accusing him of:

  • Violation of ceremonial protocols by not awarding the trophy.
  • Conflict of interest by letting personal and political biases interfere.
  • Damaging cricket’s image on the global stage.

The Indian board has also warned that they will escalate the matter to the International Cricket Council (ICC) in the upcoming November meeting.

Politics In Sport?

For many, Naqvi’s actions highlight the dangerous mix of politics and cricket. By refusing to honour the winning side, he’s accused of letting national sentiment get in the way of sportsmanship. The ACC has expressed “regret” over the incident, but Naqvi himself hasn’t issued any apology yet.

Cricket fans online have dubbed the incident the “trophy stealing act”, calling it one of the most embarrassing moments in Asia Cup history.

What Happens Next?

Right now, the Asia Cup trophy is with the UAE cricket board. But when India will finally get their hands on it remains a big question.

With the BCCI tightening its stance and planning to take the matter up with the ICC, this controversy isn’t ending anytime soon. What should have been a moment of celebration for Indian cricket has now turned into one of the biggest off-field scandals of the year.
