Delhi and its surrounding areas woke up to steady showers on Monday, giving residents much-needed relief from humid conditions. The rain, which began late Sunday night, continued through Monday afternoon, leading to a sharp 8°C drop in temperature.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi recorded 10.3 mm of rain at Safdarjung and 13.2 mm at Lodhi Road. The maximum temperature stood at 26.5°C — nearly 7°C below normal.

Widespread Rain Across UP, Haryana, and Punjab

The rain wasn’t limited to Delhi alone. Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram also saw heavy showers throughout the morning. In Uttar Pradesh, cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, and Meerut experienced overcast skies and intermittent rainfall.

Several regions of Punjab and Haryana, including Mohali, Amritsar, Panchkula, Hisar, and Rohtak, received moderate to heavy rain. Strong winds uprooted trees in parts of Rajasthan, including Bikaner, Kota, and Udaipur.

Snowfall Shuts Down Manali-Leh Highway

In the hills, the first major snowfall of the season blanketed parts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Temperatures in Himachal dropped sharply — Dharamshala recorded a maximum of 25°C, while Keylong hit 0°C.

The Manali-Leh Highway has been temporarily shut after heavy snow left around 400 vehicles stranded. In Jammu and Kashmir, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Kulgam witnessed fresh snow, marking the official start of winter in the region.

Kedarnath Sees One Foot of Snow, Heli Services Suspended

In Uttarakhand, Kedarnath Dham received nearly one foot of snow by Monday evening — the first major snowfall of the season. Due to bad weather, helicopter services to Kedarnath have been temporarily suspended.

Authorities also confirmed that Hemkund Sahib will close for the season on October 10. The IMD warned of continued rainfall and snowfall in the higher reaches of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and J&K over the next two days.

Western Disturbance Behind Weather Shift

Meteorologists attribute this widespread weather change to an active Western Disturbance moving across North India. Its impact was visible from Delhi to the Himalayan states, causing widespread precipitation and a dip in temperatures.

The IMD has predicted light rain for Delhi-NCR on Tuesday, with skies expected to clear by Wednesday.

Thanks to continuous rainfall, Delhi’s air quality improved significantly. The Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped to 112, categorized as “moderate”. Experts, however, warned that pollution levels could rise again once the moisture levels decrease.

In Summary

Rain and snowfall have brought a refreshing change across North India. While Delhiites are enjoying the cooler breeze, the hills have turned into scenic white wonderlands — a sign that winter is just around the corner.
