Starting September 22, passengers traveling by train will get a small but welcome relief—Rail Neer water bottles are getting cheaper. Thanks to a GST cut, Indian Railways has decided to reduce the price of its packaged drinking water.
What’s Changing?
The Railway Board has officially revised the maximum retail price (MRP) of Rail Neer. A 1-litre bottle will now cost ₹14 instead of ₹15, and the smaller 500 ml pack will drop from ₹10 to ₹9.
This isn’t just limited to Rail Neer. Other packaged water brands selected by IRCTC and sold on trains or railway premises will also follow the same pricing—from ₹15 to ₹14 for a litre, and from ₹10 to ₹9 for a 500 ml bottle.

Why the Price Cut?
It all comes down to the reduction in GST. Until now, drinking water bottles—including the popular 20-litre jars used in most homes—were taxed at 12%. Starting September 22, that rate drops to just 5%.
That means whether you’re refilling your home jar or buying a bottle of Rail Neer on your train journey, water is going to be a little easier on the wallet.
Official Confirmation
The announcement came through a Railway Board letter (No. 2025/Catering/631/09) circulated on September 20. It was signed by Rangarajan Anantharanam and confirmed by the Finance Directorate in coordination with IRCTC.
The revised prices will take effect right after midnight on September 22. From that day forward, both Rail Neer and other packaged brands sold at railway stations and trains will reflect the new rates.

What This Means for Passengers
Sure, a ₹1 drop may not sound massive, but for millions of passengers who rely on Rail Neer during their journeys, it adds up. Plus, it’s a clear signal that the Railways is passing on tax benefits directly to the public—a rare but welcome move.
And when you think about it, every little saving counts—especially for daily train commuters and families traveling long distances
