New Delhi: A fresh controversy has erupted over the health of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, with his wife Gitanjali Angmo accusing Safdarjung Hospital of withholding key medical information while seeking permission from the Delhi High Court to shift him to a private hospital. Hospital sources, however, have rejected the allegation, claiming the patient’s potassium levels were already shared with the family in an official medical report.
Hospital Sources Reject Wife’s Allegations
According to sources quoted by ANI, the Patient Summary Report handed over to Gitanjali Angmo on Saturday clearly mentioned Wangchuk’s potassium levels.
The clarification came after Angmo alleged in a social media post on Sunday that the hospital had neither provided the potassium values in writing nor included the exact figures in its public health bulletin.
Hospital sources said such public statements during an ongoing course of treatment could make medical management more difficult. They added that a multidisciplinary team of doctors has been regularly counselling both Wangchuk and his family to ensure timely treatment and adherence to medical advice.

Sonam Wangchuk Taken to Safdarjung Hospital
Wangchuk was taken to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police on Saturday, the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike.
He has been fasting since June 28 in support of protests led by the Campaign for Justice and Peace (CJP) over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and reported student deaths linked to the controversy.
His removal from the protest site has since become a major point of legal and political debate.
Wife Alleges Illegal Detention Inside Hospital
In a post on X, Gitanjali Angmo alleged that the family has repeatedly requested permission to shift Wangchuk to a private hospital but those requests have been denied.
She also claimed heavy police deployment inside the hospital has severely restricted the family’s movement.
“No family should have to fight the system simply to choose where their loved one receives medical care,” she wrote, adding that the hospital’s public health bulletin had “conveniently omitted” the actual potassium reading.
Delhi High Court Petition Seeks Transfer
Angmo has now approached the Delhi High Court, requesting urgent permission to move Wangchuk to a private hospital of her choice.
In her petition, she said she has lost confidence in Safdarjung Hospital and alleged that authorities have disclosed only selective medical information while refusing an independent assessment of Wangchuk’s condition.
She argued that the family should have the right to choose where he receives treatment, especially given concerns over his deteriorating health after more than three weeks of fasting.

Petition Questions Medical Intervention
The petition also challenges the circumstances under which Wangchuk was removed from the protest site.
According to the plea, the Delhi High Court had earlier directed authorities to monitor his health and intervene medically if required. However, Angmo argued that officials misused that order by forcibly shifting him despite there being no immediate medical emergency.
The petition describes the intervention as “neither medically necessary nor legally justified” and alleges it violated Wangchuk’s fundamental rights.
Dispute Over Potassium Test Results
One of the central issues raised in the petition is an alleged discrepancy in Wangchuk’s potassium levels.
The plea claims Safdarjung Hospital initially reported a potassium level of 2.9, while testing conducted later by an independent agency on blood samples provided to the family reportedly showed a level of 3.6.
According to the petition, the blood samples were handed over around 10:30 pm, nearly 10.5 hours after they were requested. The family argues that the differing results raise serious questions about the medical information shared by hospital authorities.
Family Wants Independent Medical Access
Besides seeking permission to transfer Wangchuk to another hospital, the petition asks the High Court to allow unrestricted access for doctors who had been monitoring him throughout his hunger strike, as well as access for his legal team.
The plea also requests permission for independent medical examinations and diagnostic tests by doctors and laboratories chosen by Wangchuk and his family.
What Happens Next?
The Delhi High Court is expected to hear the matter urgently after the family’s request for an immediate listing.
For now, two sharply different versions remain on record. While hospital authorities maintain that all relevant medical details were properly communicated and treatment is being carried out according to protocol, Wangchuk’s family continues to question both the transparency of his medical care and the legality of his continued hospitalisation.
The court’s decision is likely to determine whether the activist can be transferred to a private hospital and whether an independent medical evaluation will be allowed.
